Sacrament

Confirmation

Confirmation is the sacrament in which young people are strengthened by the gifts of the Holy Spirit and take a deeper step in their journey of faith. It completes the grace of Baptism and calls each person to live as an active witness to Christ.

The parish works closely with families and schools to help candidates prepare for this important milestone.

Preparation

Preparing for Confirmation

Preparation for Confirmation usually takes place through the parish and local schools. Candidates are encouraged to grow in their understanding of faith, prayer, and community life.

Families play an important role in supporting candidates as they prepare to receive the Holy Spirit and take greater responsibility within the Church.

  • The candidate should be baptised Catholic
  • Regular participation in Mass is encouraged
  • Preparation is usually completed through the parish programme or school
  • A sponsor must be a confirmed Catholic in good standing
  • The candidate may be asked to choose a Confirmation name

Questions

Common Questions

Who can receive Confirmation?

Confirmation is usually received by young people who have already been baptised and have prepared through the parish or school programme.

What is a sponsor?

A sponsor is a confirmed Catholic who supports the candidate in their faith journey. They stand with the candidate during the ceremony and continue to encourage them afterwards.

Do candidates need to choose a Confirmation name?

In some cases, candidates are invited to choose a saint’s name as part of their preparation, though this may vary by parish.

What happens during the ceremony?

During Confirmation, the bishop (or delegated priest) lays hands on the candidates and anoints them with chrism oil, sealing them with the gift of the Holy Spirit.
