A sponsor is a confirmed Catholic who supports the candidate in their faith journey. They stand with the candidate during the ceremony and continue to encourage them afterwards.

During Confirmation, the bishop (or delegated priest) lays hands on the candidates and anoints them with chrism oil, sealing them with the gift of the Holy Spirit.
